Porté en Charente-Maritime et en Gironde, le nom s'écrit aussi Noinain. A noter les formes voisines Nonin et Nonain (36, 41, 80). Le rapprochement avec l'ancien français "nonain" (= religieuse) est possible, mais semble peu judicieux. M.T. Morlet voit dans Nonin un diminutif tiré de noms enfantins tels que Nono ou Nonia, solution également possible pour Noinin. A envisager aussi un diminutif de Noin, nom de personne d'origine germanique (Nodwin) rencontré notamment en Normandie.
